  1. In the short story Eveline, do you feel sorry for the main character after she tells us about her father? After she weighs her pros and cons about leaving does her demeanor change in any way? Do you feel as if she was scared to leave her father or that her religion and promise to her mother is what kept her from leaving?

    1. I did feel sorry for the main character after she tells us about her father, but not for the reason that I think that most people would I feel sorry for her. She is tied to inner guilt about leaving her father, placed upon her by her mother. This combined with the restrictions set upon her by religion and by the time period itself. I don’t know that her demeanor changed in any way after her decision to leave. Although she seems to fleetly embrace her freedom, she seems afterward to be in a state of shock. I do not think that it was any specific thing that kept her from leaving, rather a combination of multiple things that kept her tied to not just her father, but rather things that were familiar to herself. I also don’t believe that there was any conscious decision to stay or to go, but that she was just paralyzed by fear.

  2. In the short story “Nuit of the Living Dead”, Why does Sedaris start the story off with the main character drowning a mouse? How does that have an effect on the story? What details around the home makes the lost tourist feel uncomfortable and uneasy to enter the house? Was the narrator uncomfortable and uneasy to start with?

  3. “Happy Endings” (question 4)

How are all the different scenarios coming to the same fate of both John and Mary dying?

    1. In my opinion they all come to the same fate of them dying because at the end of the day everyone dies. The beginning of the story could be different every single time but the ending whether they are together or not will always be the same.

  4. How does the atmosphere in The Story of an Hour change throughout the story? How does the author illustrate the atmosphere?

In this short story, the atmosphere changes quickly to the readers amusement. From tense and serious to calm and elated. The author illustrates this regularly throughout the story by describing the character’s surroundings. For example, when she was happy she described the scene outside as a spring day, distant songs and twittering sparrows. However, just as the atmosphere changed so did the character’s thoughts. The last scene doesn’t explain much but you are left with a feeling of horror and chaos.

  5. “Happy Ending” starts out with A. and all other beginnings end with A. What is the meaning of A.? Is A. a happy ending?
Or is A. what everyone wants a good story to end with no matter what the beginning or middle in-tell?

    1. I think “A” is meant to show that no matter what, if the two people were happy while alive, then even their death in the end is still a happy ending. “A” is what everyone wants the story to end with, that the people lived happily. Even if in the middle of the story there were some unhappy endings.

  6. Why in “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin does Mrs. Malard except the death of her husband so quickly? Does the descriptive narration set the tone for the story? Is the tone foreshadowing anything? Why was Mrs. Mallard so elated after finding out her husband was dead? Why was Richard trying to shield Brently Mallard from his wife? What does the last phrase “of joy that kills” mean?

  7. In the story “Why I Live at the P.O.” is the time period and the geographical location crucial elements to the story? Could you change the place and the time period with little or no effect to the meaning of the story?

  8. In the short story “The Nuit of the Living Dead”, do you find it ironic that the main character was just as spooked about being in the cellar as the man from the van was when he entered the house? Why was the story of the burglar significant?

  9. How do we know that Mrs. Mallard only had that one hour of happiness in Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour”? Is there any inclination or evidence to prove otherwise that the events only took place in the space of an hour?

  10. In the story “Love in L.A.”, does Jake’s character change during the course of the story? Do you feel sympathetic toward Jake or toward the women that he collides with at any time in the story? What sort of person is Jake? Does Jake have a foil?

    1. I feel more sympathetic towards the woman. Even with as nice as he was being, lying about the insurance and everything would really bother me. What do you mean by does Jake have a foil?

  11. In the story “Nuit of the Living Dead”, how does the 3am time affect the story? Does this lead to speculation after the introductions talk of zombies?

    1. My initial reaction to the title of the story led me to believe this was about zombies. Up until I realized the mouse had died I still thought zombies were going to attack and add a new twist to the plot. When the ending finally surfaced I was disappointed because it was so short and nothing scary happened.

  12. What is the setting- the time and location in the short story, “Love in L.A.”? How important are these elements in the story? Could it be set in another time or place just as well? is the setting significant to the meaning of the story?

    1. I think the fact that the story happened during rush hour is important, because traffic is moving slow and Jake isn’t paying much attention because of it. Although, I don’t know if it needed to be placed in L.A., I think the story would have worked in any large city. I wonder if the characters would have been as believable in place like New York City where the people are notorious for being grumpy and in a hurry. I don’t think Jake’s flirting would have been as easily received.

  13. In the story “Nuit of the Living Dead”, who narrates the story? What would have been gained if it was told from the mouse’s point of view, or the strangers point of view? Does it change the plot?
